Now, what is not clear to me, is what I have to change in ~/.vnc/xstartup to get Gnome running. I can successfully connect from my Windows PC via VNCViewer and see a grey window. ![]() #x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" & Sudo apt-get install tightvncserver xtightvncviewer tightvnc-javaįile ~/.vnc/xstartup initially contains the following lines: #!/bin/sh To install and configure the software I ran the following commands: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop > Package libjpeg.I'd like to access my Ubuntu 16.10 VPS (Contabo) with using a GNOME environment with VNC, however I am still facing some issues that I couldn't solve so far. So we also followed the same approach, obsoleting vnc with Tightvnc. Other distros ( like fedora., etc) obsoleted vnc with the Tightvnc. Recent times, Tightvnc is the popular opensource tool that provides VNC capabilities. The development stopped long back ( year 2000 itself). "vnc" was a older Unix based package (from AT & T). Subject: Tightvnc and vnc (with no details) is confusing ![]() > Package libjpeg.ppc 0:9c-1 will be installed > Processing Dependency: libjpeg for package: tightvnc-1.3.10-1.ppc > Package tightvnc.ppc 0:1.3.10-1 will be installed Package vnc is obsoleted by tightvnc, trying to install tightvnc-1.3.10-1.ppc instead Name and summary matches only, use "search all" for everything. The description says Virtual Network Computing = not helpful. Yum search for vnc shows tightvnc-server.ppc and plain vnc.ppc ![]()
